I represent the estate sale of a collection of museum quality, very large star rubies. The largest in the collection is the Appalachian Star Ruby, which is larger (139.43 carats) and of finer quality than the Rosser Reeves Ruby. It was valued at $300,000 per carat in 2007. The 4 rubies in the collection contain over 342 carats, and are all very fine, museum quality gems. Have there been any recent sales of large, fine quality star rubies?

Hello I am Harold G Roper Jr the son of the later Harold Roper who found the Lone star, as for where the stone is we were last told it was overseas and the money(amount unknown) was over there too and that there is no way to get either back so my Father who passed away in 2007 was never rewarded for his stone. The last known person to know where it is at and the value would be Daniel Banks the gem broker who he took it to and he might know the value the the stone was worth so if anyone besides us can find out it would be appreciated to know where and what it”s worth was and any suggestions on how to get the money or stone for the family would be appreciated too..

Mr. F.D.L Ekanayake was my uncle (my father’s eldest brother).
I remember my dad telling me the story of my uncle’s discovery of this stone, it was very fascinating.
I was fortunate enough to see a sample of the stone in London’s Natural History Museum in the 1980′s.

I have a less idealistic view of art. It is possible to mass-produce beautiful things. Many Viking Period tortoise brooches are lovely, depending on the level of skill and care with which they were made.

I come across strikingly beautiful pieces all the time in my studies. That’s one of the reasons that I study small finds!

First I would like to say thanks to Dr.Shihaan Larif.
Of course maybe because I am a jeweller and I am a Russian. (in South Africa) I am surprised how little people know this days. In the country of gold (South Africa) people don’t even know what gold is. When I say 9ct gold, people ask me, is it a solid gold?
Gemstones? You can forget to talk about it to a public.
Goldsmiths don’t know much about gems. Just common diamond, ruby, sapphire, thats all they know.
Lots of people come to my site from Google search with questions about making jewellery. Then I publish a book, jewellery making course.I am giving this book at no cost. Guess what, not many people even downloading the book.

It is really sad to see that people know so little and don’t want to learn.

Your post is awesome.

The Star of Artaban was a promotional gimmick and was brought to the US by Hollywood producer Jerry Weintraub’s father who was a jewelry wholesaler. The story is in his new book, When I Stop Talking, You’ll Know I’m Dead. He claims it has little value. His father named it as a promotional gimmick to get publicity. As he traveled from city to city he would hire armed guards to escort him. He put it on display to attract customers. He then donated it to the Smithsonian. The story is in the early part of the book and he talked about it on Larry King Live.

There is a major error in the identification of the contributors of the American Golden Topaz to the Smithsonian Museum. The identifying muuseum card correctl states:
“Gift of the Rockhound Hobbyists of America through the efforts of the six regional federations of minerological societies and Drs. Marie and Ed Borgatta, 1988″ The Borgattas were the major contributors of the Topaz.

Since you are resident in Canada, the best option would be to buy a book online at Amazon or any other online bookshop. Alternatively you can check your nearest public library for books on gemmology.
